So here’s a weird coincidence: the thing that inspired Ali to write the September prompts was being hospitalised with pulmonary embolisms. Which I’ve also had this year. And this made the prompts especially apt for me, I must say.

This month we had a think about rest, the pace of our lives, and the places that we find joy.

I find a lot of incongruity in the pace of my mind, and the pace that my body allows me to live at, so that was something I thought a lot about as I did these prompts. I also thought about my relationship with resting – also a complicated one.

Finally, we were prompted to make a list of things that brought us joy this month. I won’t lie – there were days when joy was pretty hard to find. I’d been sick for so long, with no end in sight, and that was making me pretty depressed. So on the days where I couldn’t find joy, I looked instead for things to be grateful for. And I’m never short of those.
